This was a pretty early gig. The KRB was scheduled to play from about 4pm to 8pm for a backyard wedding reception at a cute little house in the Laguna Hills area, inland from Laguna Beach. We arrived a couple of hours before downbeat so that we could be all set up and sound checked before the guests arrived. Hal was just rolling in when I pulled up.
There were two balloons in the front yard, the letters "M" and "L", for Matt and Laura, the newlyweds. I followed Hal down the side of the house into the back yard. There was a dance floor in front of the upper deck where the band set up. The lower deck had a jacuzzi.
Jack and Skyler had arrived about an hour before we did to get the PA and lights set up. The back yard was kind of mushy from all the recent rain. Thankfully there was just a short flight of stairs to get to the upper deck.
The wedding planner and her crew were busy taking care of all the last minute details.
I used my small rig again so as not to offend the neighbors too much.
It looks like the lads are just about ready to sound check. Jack is tidying up the cables to the sub-woofer.
You see the bar in the corner of the back yard. They served a lot of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer tonight. Mario told me it's the "hipster beer". I haven't had PBR in 30 years.
Come on up, the weather's fine!
We're all sound checked and ready to go.
It's selfie time!
There was a pretty steep hillside behind us. I'm glad it did not come down during all the rain. You can see tarp over on the neighbor's property behind me in the picture above.
Skyler and Jack are ready to mix and DJ.
There was a lot of time to kill before our first set so we all got back to our roots and hung out in the garage. It was our green room.
Mario decided to have a little snooze while we waited.
After all the guests arrived the bride and groom made their entrance so it was time for us to go on. We made our way to the stage.
Hal looks great in his leather jacket and cowboy hat.
The string section is tuning up.
Kelly and I get a selfie.
Then the bride and groom get their first dance as husband and wife.
Our first set was a dinner set, mellow music at a reasonable volume.
Here is Skyler's view from the mixer.
After our dinner set it was time for the band to get some grub. I had some great BBQ chicken, pulled pork, and beef brisket on top of a nice salad with pork'n'beans and slaw. They also had a big tray of mashed sweet potatoes but I don't do sweet potatoes. (I'll have to tell you my sweet potato story sometime.)
It's dark when we start our dance set. Look out! The party's gettin' started! Kelly had to put on a coat but it wasn't that cold, thankfully.
It looks like Mario is still napping.
The bride and groom hit the dance floor.
Daniel get them going with his big hit, "Devil Went Down To Georgia".
I was surprised how many guests knew how to do the 10-step.
Pretty soon the PBR took effect and they threw their hands in the air like they just didn't care.
We were done at 8pm and loaded out while Skyler played DJ music until 9pm. He kept the young folk dancing up a storm.
We had to carry our gear out to the corner of the patio before we could load it up on our carts and roll it out to the street. We didn't want to wreck the festivities. I thanked the groom, and the bride's father, for all their hospitality. It was a very nice party. The drive home was uneventful, just over an hour long. No hill for a climber. Thanks for looking!
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
