Me and the KRB had a fun time on the beach at the Seal Beach summer concert series. We played the first concert of the series to a fun crowd with perfect weather.
Skip and Art were chatting while Art unloads when I pulled up. We were glad that the city had blocked off some parking spaces for us on the street. Parking is a nightmare down by the beach.
I rolled my gear up to the small-ish stage (12x16) and found a nice QSC sound system.
Art and Mario get their gear in order. Skip was already set up, trumpet and everything.
I should've brought my small rig. But I think my GK stuff looks pretty good in front of the pier.
After I set up I took a little stroll because we weren't quite ready to sound check. This is the second longest wooden pier in the state of California.
There is at least one seal at the pier entrance next to the veteran memorial.
This is Ted, our sound guy. He's a great guy to work with, has really good gear, and does an excellent job. His company is DJE Sound and Lighting.
You know what Mario is doing, right? He's giving Ted some kick drum.
Daniel and Art sound check.
Skip checks his messages while waiting his turn to sound check. Skip won the longest commute today, driving two hours for this gig.
After sound check, most of the lads go around the corner for a slice. Art used to work in this neighborhood and knew all the "in" places.
Skip and I enjoy our slices at a table while Art and Mario head back to the beach.
It was pretty dang good pizza. I got the "deluxe".
After supper we headed back to the stage to put on the show. It was a perfect evening to make some noise.
Skip readies his iPad. Mario got a nice sub-woofer and an 8" QSC monitor.
Kelly readies her setlist and lyrics.
We've got time for a quick amp-selfie before we start the show.
Skip is ready to put on the show. We've really got to get him a Scully shirt.
Mario wore his shirt to match his new drum kit.
Daniel and Art are waiting for the announcer to finish.
Here's a shot of the crowd just before we start. It was a relatively small park and it was packed.
Kelly puts on the show.
We get a 15 minute break so I wander over to the other side of the pier where Ted has set up a couple more speakers for the Kid Zone, face painting, snack, drinks, etc.
We were kind of cozy on stage, not much room for our regular choreography.
The crowd was dancing all day long. I think they kind of liked us a little bit.
There were a couple of special guests in the crowd today. Do you see them?
We played one of our Journey songs as an encore. The audience had a blast.
Our first special guest was my buddy and fellow bass player, Dave. He was kind enough to drop by after work after hearing we would be here. I hope to see one of his gigs soon.
The other special guest was Stephanie. You might remember Stephanie from our "Nashville" show at Disney a couple years ago.
Stephanie is a real sweetheart and uber-talented. She just got back from Seattle where she starred in a musical comedy run of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. I foresee great things for her.
Alas, the fun is over and it's time to get back to work being a roadie again.
After loading up the trusty old Astro van I took one more parting shot of the Seal Beach Pier.
I found a few cell phone videos on the Freindface and cluged them together to give you and idea of how much fun we had.
And here's a promotional painting by Edvard Munch advertising this gig. (j/k)
A good time was had by all. For our next outing we'll be performing at the Valley View Casino. I like that place. I just wish it was closer. But I'm not complaining!
Thanks for looking!
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
