Now this was a pretty dang fun show! Arnie's friend, Richard Smith, has been touring around the country and on his way through here Arnie asked if he'd like to add another house concert to his agenda. Richard was happy to so we got to share the stage with him.
The venue was at Rob's house. Rob is the sound guy who you've seen working with True Willie on some of our local gigs. This is our venue, Rob's boat garage. He's got another four car garage attached to his house. We loaded in and soundchecked the day before the show.
Inside this impressive man cave Rob has set up his stage, lights, and sound system for this event. Here we are doing the setup dance.
These were my weapons of choice for this show. Richard's music lends itself toward the acoustic bass.
Yes, I threw around some pucks while the guys were setting up.
Here's Rob at the soundboard talking to Johnny.
A view from the soundboard. You see our good friend Chris helping out with the sound system.
I took a little walk through Rob's back yard. He has a really nice property.
Randy wasn't here for the "day before" soundcheck but the rest of us are all set up.
A little mood lighting, please.
Here's a view from the stage after soundcheck. Yes, that's a really nice bar in the back of this man cave. There's also an engine hoist on the ceiling.
Our host sets us up a round now that we're done for the evening. We'll be back tomorrow for more of Rob's hospitality.
Here's a little about the star of our show this evening.
I think Arnie is trying to steal some licks while Richard soundchecks.
Richard borrowed this amp while he's in town. It sounded great and could get pretty dang loud.
Richard is pretty much done with soundcheck now. We'll have another little soundcheck with Amanda now.
Johnny Magic Fingers is in a good mood tonight. I was feeling pretty good too. Since we set up the night before it was nice not having to schlep your gear and then play shortly afterwards.
Amanda looks so cute in her hat and fringe.
I should've found out who made Richard's guitar. Sorry. I know the maker is a luthier in Laguna Beach.
OK! Now we're getting serious! The early guests have started to arrive so the snacks are coming out. There was also beer, wine, and soft drinks.
Amanda and I have a moment before the show. Tara photobombs. Tara took good care of us all night. That 805 is pretty good suds.
Our friend Toni joins us.
The stage is ready. The lights look good.
We're getting close to Richard's downbeat. The guests enjoy snacks and beverages. We had lots of good friends here who follow us around and seem to like us.
Richard puts on his guitar shirt and takes a picture with Mr. and Mrs. Arnie before he goes on stage.
Oh, why not. Here are two lovely young ladies just because.
Oh, lucky me. Teri and Toni.
Our host and hostess, Rob and Susan.
The band is just about to pounce on the meatballs, Johnny, Jason, and Randy.
You always put beauty in the middle when taking a picture.
Arnie introduces Richard. He's played with all the greats, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Brent Mason, Tommy Emmanuel, you name it.
Richard plays his set for an hour. He was masterful and funny, very entertaining.
Then after a 15 minute pause the ANB played for a half hour. Then we got Richard back up to play some with us. Here's Amanda kicking things off.
Richard usually plays seated but he was having so much fun he stood up with us.
Here are more performance shots. It was a fun night.
Johnny showed off his mad boogie-woogie skilz.
Randy was a'slippin' and a'slidin'.
We played stuff like "Jerry's Breakdown" and "Hot Toddy".
Arnie was having a great time picking with one of his heroes.
Fun stuff! You can tell Richard is having fun. He's standing up!
I had such fun that I forgot to take my standard tear down photo. But we did tear down and say good night. Arnie and Richard are already planning another event like this the next time he's in town. Good stuff. Here's a little video of Richard doing his thing.
I'm about to head over the the Orange Show Fairgrounds to play again with the ANB. Then Saturday (5/4/19) John and I are flying up to Sacramento to play with True Willie at Feather Falls Casino. It's a busy week. Hey, thanks for looking!
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
